It monitors, handles and notifies you in real time of any event, performance issue, security breach or application problem that could impact the operating health of your iSeries and Windows servers, as well as networked services such as your corporate website. VISUAL Message Center is unique in that it provides an enterprise wide solution that is accessible for small and medium sized companies, offering dedicated functionality at a fraction of the cost and complexity of enterprise management "frameworks".

The VISUAL Message Center suite is made up of a SmartConsole and an extensible group of Agents.The SmartConsole is a high-speed, extensible, centralized graphical console that allows the collection and management of all server and network events, and provides advanced “business impact” maps, automated event analysis and treatment, and state-of-the-art notification features. The agents run on individual iSeries or Windows servers monitor specific technology activity areas (e.g. applications, security, system messages, performance data, TCP/IP services) and deliver information to the Smart Console. Problems can be solved immediately thanks to our exclusive diagnosing tools, and the flexible Reporting System gives operators and managers easy to understand, summarized or detailed information about system and application activity.

Among the dozens of innovative features of VISUAL Message Center are:

  • Customizable, Stateful, Object oriented Business Views: users can classify events into understandable, real world objects such as "Printer", "Router", or service entities such as "Web back end" and create a hierarchy among them with drag and drop simplicity. Components can be reused and moved into other groupings, so if a Router affects diverse services, it is possible to see it in the business map.

  • Openness: VISUAL Message Center can add custom code to enhance its business rules, and receive and send events in different industry standards, like SNMP, WMI, DLLs, etc. It also can receive messages from Unix, Linux, and Windows platforms so Operators can have a 360 degrees vision of their environment.

  • Encapsulated Knowledge: event management knowledge can be encapsulated so most common actions can be automated, and those that require manual intervention can be made self-explanatory and point to HTML, Word or multimedia documents so the mean time to resolution can be reduced.

  • Scalability: thanks to its exclusive, memory resident event database and the revamped Expression Analyzer, which can process more than 700,000 business rules per second, version 5.00 offers unmatched scalability

  • High Availability: VISUAL Message Center improves its Secure Handshaking and SmartReconnect features with an event buffer to avoid data losses even when there is a network failure or the iSeries is rebooted.

  • Real Time Event Navigator: ability to surf the historical database in real time, making the location of a past event very efficient.

  • Smart Console
    Centralizes the collection and management of information from all networked servers and agents. Manages automation and notification functions. Generates Business Views that can be exported to other consoles, web portals, or the new Web SmartConsole for pervasive IT management capabilities.

  • Windows Monitoring
    The ThinkServer-powered Windows Monitoring packs supervise the availability, performance, security and operating health of Windows-based services, processes and hardware components.

    • Windows Basic: Availability and performance (disk, CPU, memory, processes, services, etc.)
    • Windows Extended: Same as in Basic Pack, plus monitoring of Event Logs, WMI data, external data via ODBC, plain text logs, etc.
    • Windows Security: Only security audit and reporting features required for regulatory compliance (HIPAA, SOX, 21 CFR Part II, Basel II, etc.)

  • Network Service Monitoring
    Allow you to monitor the availability and performance of any TCP/IP network service, including Ping, POP3, Port, SMTP, SNMP, Loop E-Mail, etc. The SNMP Adapter retrieves messages from network devices using this protocol, and generates SNMP traps to enable network event management.
  • Database Monitoring
    Monitor the availability, performance, integrity and security of DB2, Oracle and SQL Server databases. Control access to sensitive files and tables, and audit the use of SQL by users and programs.
  • Data Adapter
    Enables Business Service Management (BSM) capabilities by integrating data from business or analysis applications. Data is retrieved from external sources via ODBC.

  • iSeries Server Agent
    Collects and manages batch messages from any iSeries message queue (e.g. QSYSOPR). Monitors job activity, duration and status, job queues, devices, history log (QHST).
