Oracle databases can be very difficult to adjust and
maintain. Administrators often cannot dedicate enough time to systematically
and continuously monitor the necessary parameters to determine availability
and performance of the database servers. At the same time, current security
needs and legislation demand that critical and confidential data stored
on Oracle is audited, adding complexity to the DBA's job.
Now, companies using Oracle can simplify all these tasks
with the new VISUAL Message Center Oracle
ThinAgents, which monitor database performance and availability, in addition
to auditing user activity on any platform.
With Tango/04's VISUAL Message
Center, the central SmartConsole
can collect messages from multiple Oracle servers in addition to the rest
of the company's IT infrastructure.
Oracle ThinAgents, powered by the ThinkServer
monitoring engine, are preconfigured based on widely accepted industry
best practices to automatically solve problems by executing predefined
actions, or alerting in real time to events that require human intervention.

| VISUAL Message Center's Oracle ThinAgents monitor
the operating health of your Oracle databases, which you can integrate
in Enterprise Views to reflect the actual status of your applications. |
Oracle ThinAgents are organized in three
groups:
Availability
Oracle ThinAgents check the state of specific objects
that may affect the availability of the database, and monitor Alert Log
entries to verify that the database is working and responding to requests.
Oracle Availability ThinAgents include:
- Free tablespaces
- Chained rows
- Max extents control
- Index rebuild
- Recovery checks
- Startup/shutdown checks
- Alert log size
- Data block corruption
- Archiving process status
- Connection test
- Database service (only Windows)
- Listener service (only Windows)

Performance
Oracle ThinAgents monitor key parameters to measure database
performance and analyze events that may indicate a decrease in performance.
In addition, they allow for the execution and measurement of synthetic
transactions, which send a typical SQL query to the database and measure
the response time and number of lines returned.
In combination, these ThinAgents offer an easy and secure
way to gain insight into the real level of service as experienced by the
end-user.

| The health state of Oracle databases can be represented
in a graphical Enterprise View to help database administrators and
LOB managers monitor the availability, performance and security of
Oracle-based applications in real time. |
Key performance indicators retrieved
are:
- Buffer cache hit ratio
- Library cache hit ratio
- Data dictionary cache activity
- Shared servers
- Dispatchers
- Rollback contention
- Latch contention
- Synthetic transactions

User Activity Auditing
User Activity Auditing ThinAgents monitor actions
related to user administration and user activity on the system. They can
detect abnormal or suspect transactions, helping DBAs manage security
policies on Oracle environments from a single unified graphic console.
Oracle Auditing helps you comply with the Sarbanes-Oxley
Act (SOX) and other regulations by performing security policy checks commonly
required by codes of best practice such as COBIT, ITIL and ISO-17799.
Featured auditing actions include:
- Profile manipulation (create, delete, update)
- Role manipulation (create, delete, update,
alter)
- User manipulation (create, delete, update,
special grants)
- Relevant users audit (insert, delete, update,
select, create role, create user)
- Super user audit (SYSDBA, SYSOPER). Oracle
versions 9 & 10
- User authentication (expired passwords, locked
user accounts, non-compliant validation policies passwords, wrong passwords)
- User logins (user logoff, user logon)
Oracle User Activity Auditing ThinAgents are available
for Oracle databases running on Windows servers only.
