What is happening inside your Microsoft SQL Server database?
Who is causing the incidents? Does your company comply with regulations
that require data auditing? How can you improve the availability of your
corporate data? Is the data really protected? Is database performance
optimal?
These are some of the questions that are most frequently
asked by Microsoft SQL Server database administrators. Now they can respond
to all of them with VISUAL Message Center's
new SQL Server Auditing, Performance and Availability ThinAgents, powered
by ThinkServer technology.
 |
| VISUAL Message Center's SQL Server Monitoring ThinAgents
provide your IT staff, DBAs and LOB managers with a full understanding
of the operating health of their databases and applications at a glance. |
The new SQL Server ThinAgents are grouped
in three categories:
For companies requiring record-level data auditing of
SQL Server databases for fraud prevention or compliance with regulations
such as HIPAA, 21 CFR Part 11, Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) and European privacy
laws, complement the functionality of these ThinAgents with Tango/04 Data
Monitor for SQL Server.
SQL Server Auditing ThinAgents
The new SQL Server Auditing ThinAgents offer easy
auditing of access to tables by users and applications, as required by
many best practice codes and regulations worldwide.
The ThinkServer
monitoring engine enables the generation of SQL Server auditing events
in real-time. Messages and system status can be sent to the SmartConsole
for the automatic generation of control dashboards, alerts, reports and
more.
SQL Server Auditing ThinAgents available include:
- Security auditing
- Transactions auditing
- Scans auditing
- Locks auditing
- User auditing
- SQL statement auditing
- Stored procedures
- Data files
- SQL server audit (generic)
- Object changes
- Errors and warnings
These ThinAgents support both SQL Server 2000 and
SQL Server 7, and are very easy to configure. Simply define the data source
filters to retrieve only the critical events, minimizing the total number
of events and thereby avoiding impact on performance.
SQL Server Auditing ThinAgents include predefined
configurations based on successful implementations worldwide and are designed
to prevent the retrieval of superfluous events.
Strengthen the data protection capabilities of
VISUAL Message Center's SQL Server ThinAgents with Tango/04 Data Monitor
for SQL Server, an easy to use, record-level data auditing solution of
SQL Server databases.

SQL
Server Availability ThinAgents
This new range of ThinAgents is based on SQL traces generated
and stored for every server transaction. ThinAgents capture these traces
and manage them as entries in a historical file for auditing the status
of the SQL Server databases.
In addition to databases, these agents control elements
of the infrastructure that can interfere with the proper functioning of
the databases. By monitoring processes as well as systems, the SQL Server
ThinAgents allow you to determine whether the problem is related to hardware,
configuration, utilization or programming.
 |
| The new SQL Server Availability and Performance ThinAgents
monitor the most important parameters to quickly detect problems and
bottlenecks, thereby ensuring maximum performance and availability
of your SQL Server databases and the systems on which they reside. |
The new SQL Server Availability ThinAgents comprise the
following monitors:
- Control of the services on which the database
depends to run properly.
- Sufficient disk space allocated to the database.
- Availability of network interfaces.
- Quick queries to the database.

SQL Server Performance ThinAgents
The SQL Server ThinAgents monitor the most important
parameters to quickly detect performance problems and bottlenecks, thereby
ensuring maximum performance and availability of your SQL Server databases
and the systems on which they reside.
The new SQL Server Performance ThinAgents include
the following monitors:
- System: CPU, memory, disk monitors (frequency
of access, response times, load balance, etc.)
- Environment: consumption of SQL Server
system resources in relation to remaining applications to determine
whether SQL Server can run correctly.
- SQL Server:
- Basic: database connections, memory
cache utilization (prevent unnecessary disk access and improve performance),
utilization of log transactions, locks and deadlocks, processes
that need memory in order to run, scans (iterations per table or
index), etc.
- Medium: less important additional
information regarding memory, locks and latches
- Advanced: all information available
regarding SQL Server performance, for advanced users with requirements
not covered by these monitors.
- SQL Server processes:
- TOP 10 internal SQL Server processes that
consume most memory
- TOP 10 internal SQL Server processes that
consume most CPU
- TOP 10 processes that generate most I/O
transactions
- TOP 10 processes that consume most resources
in an interval
Detecting performance problems helps prevent larger
long-term problems and allows you to carry out capacity planning, comply
with Service Level Agreements (SLAs) and prevent the user from experiencing
response time problems once and for all.
